Round Rock, TX – Trellis Foundation, a public charitable organization focused on improving college attainment for low- to moderate-income students, on Wednesday announced the appointment of Alma Garcia of Brownsville, Texas, to its board of directors.

“We are incredibly pleased to welcome Alma Garcia to the Trellis Foundation Board,” said Dr. Richard Rhodes, chair of the Trellis Foundation Board and president of Austin Community College. “Her deep experience across Texas, particularly related to student transitions to higher education, will help inform the foundation’s strategy and work going forward.”

Garcia is currently the principal executive of Garcia Educational and Leadership Consulting, a position that builds on more than three decades of experience in education as well as a wealth of knowledge in learning, collective impact and nonprofit management. She began her career as a bilingual education teacher in the Brownsville Independent School District, where she went on to serve as an elementary and secondary school principal. Garcia later joined the University of Texas at Brownsville, where, as an adjunct professor, she designed instructional methods courses for graduate and undergraduate students in secondary education programs and later served as director of GEAR UP, a college awareness, readiness, enrollment and outreach program. Garcia joined Educate Texas in 2004, an educational initiative of Communities Foundation of Texas, becoming one of the foremost experts on dual enrollment and college/career readiness school models in the State. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American) and a master’s degree in educational administration from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Garcia’s appointment completes the seating of Trellis Foundation’s seven-member board, which includes Dr. Richard Rhodes of Austin, chair; Dora Ann Verde of San Antonio, secretary; Josh Hunt of El Paso; Dr. Mark Milliron of Austin; Suzanne Walsh of Greensboro, NC; and Welcome Wilson, Jr., of Houston.
